Fifteen years ago, I had a terrible relationship to food. And to myself.
I was ALWAYS thinking about food (Did I eat too much? Did I need more? Was I being "good" or "bad" that day? Why was I always hungry? How long do I need to workout today to burn off the calories I ate?
There was a lot of guilt. And shame. And beating myself up, internally (which I didn't know at the time wasn't normal).
And no matter what I did, my body never really changed.
That everything I knew about how to eat
was so WRONG.
And BACKWARDS.
And suddenly, it hit me: I had never had a meal like that in my life.
No wonder why I felt so stuck and frustrated.
It wasn't until a trip to Italy in college that I started to realize how different other countries and cultures are about FOOD.
I will never forget the moment on that trip, being at lunch and these two Italian women were sitting at the table next to me. They were laughing and sipping their wine with lunch, each with a plate of pasta, and a shared pizza and salad. Later they'd order espressos and gelato too.
They were so IN THE PRESENT MOMENT. Enjoying their food, delighting in it, but not fixating on it. Enjoying the company and the moment more.
Where I could just be present and ENJOY the food (instead of doing mental calculations, feeling guilty afterwards, etc).
What did they know, that I didn't?
Eating REAL FOOD instead of HEALTH FOOD.
Doing so, changed my body, my energy & freed up so much mental space.
And how wildly different the two things are. Like polar opposites. And none of us are every taught this, if we live in the US. It's so disturbing!
REAL FOOD, on the other hand, is what every other ancient culture & country in the world eats.
